Bioacoustics and community knowledge for climate change monitoring

First North American Biomeridian Test Station Deployed in Chesapeake Bay Watershed

Environmental sensors installed in a tree near the Chesapeake Bay

The Biomeridian Team has been working hard to install automated monitoring stations in North America. On September 19th, the first of many stations that will make up a research network along the Chesapeake Bay Watershed was installed in North East Maryland with cooperation from NorthBay Education.

Pictured above, Oliver Lippy, a NorthBay Environmental Educator, checks the equipment the morning after installation to ensure that the programmed recording patterns on the bioacoustic microphone are functioning correctly. This preliminary station is set at the northern extremities of the Chesapeake Bay, next to the Susquehanna Flats. It is located in an important flyway for migratory birds that travel down the Elk Neck Peninsula on their southbound routes.
