Bioacoustics and community knowledge for climate change monitoring

Songs of Adaptation is observing the natural world,
documenting change, and engaging communities to guide
sustainable adaptation for a changing world.

Biomeridians

Songs of Adaptation measures stories along biomeridians.
Biomeridians are lines placed on the landscape that connect a range of very different habitats.

For example, a biomeridian is observed along a mountain slope. A mountain might be tropical at the bottom and snow-covered at the peak.

Climate change shifts these habitats.

As temperatures increase, animals and plants begin to move upward on the mountain.

By monitoring multiple habitats, this project provides a way to observe those changes.

Our Work

Through our work:

Students develop a stronger
connection to their
environments.

Cloud-based computing and
artificial intelligence
make sense of big data.

Citizen science
bolsters high-tech
observations.

Rural communities better
understand their changing
environments.

Wildlife managers gather
information to make evidence-based
management decisions.

Inclusive participation
leads to sustainable
adaptation.

Two-way knowledge transfer
between communities and scientists
deepens the understanding for all.
